Cover Reveal : Stormy Surrender

Stormy Surrender
By Nicole Andrews Moore

Book Blurb

Sometimes the life you planned isn’t the one you get to live.  Sometimes the pain of the past overshadows the future.  And sometimes to start over you have to go back to where it all began.  That’s how it was for Joe Masters.  That’s how he ended up back in New Hope.  And that’s why he was in his thirties and had nothing to show for his life.  He needed a complete overhaul, just like his father’s old house.  Instead of a fast track, he had slowed down and was on a ten year plan.  These days that was more his speed.  And as much as he tried to fight the inevitable, he was learning to accept and surrender.

Martha had weathered her fair share of storms in Vermont, was accustomed to the cold, both the chill in the air and the cold shoulder in her marriage, but after the miscarriage she felt like she would never get warm again.  So she did the research from the laptop while sitting in front of the fireplace.  She knew what she needed when she Googled hope, she just never imagined that it would bring her to New Hope, South Carolina.  She never imagined that her husband would trick her into leaving and never follow.  She never imagined that a southern storm with all its force and fury could be so destructive.  But after the storm, the land is washed clean.  It’s perfect for a fresh start, a clean slate, and a new love.

Oooh, she got me at ' a new love. ' ;) . Here we are at the awaited cover. Want to take a look? Okay .
* Drum roll ! *

Feature & Follow Friday #9

Increase Blog Followers, gain Book Blog Followers and make new friends with the Book Blogger Feature & Follow! If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers — but you have to know — the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.

The Feature & Follow is hosted by TWO hosts, Parajunkee of Parajunkee’s View and Alison of Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

This Friday's question :

Tell us about the most emotional scene you've ever read in a book - and how did you react?

Oh boy..

I think I was at my worst when I read A Walk to Remember. The scene where Landon asks Jamie to marry him. Oh gosh was I bawling out tears of joy/despair. Those who have read or watched the movie will know why I would have cried at such a instance when it is supposed to be a happy one right? And when she's going down the aisle so frail and weak? Oh yeah. It isn't as effective in the movie as it is in the book.

Then when Dobby from Harry Potter dies. I LOVED HIM ROWLING !!! *sinks down in agony*.

Also The Fault in our Stars and Hex Hall #3 when Cal dies (I loved Cal!) *sob* Yeah I was a mess. I don't remember if I bawled for Vampire Academy but I do remember being terribly sad.

Like I mentioned in last week's FF post. Most of my favorite character's end up dying.

Review : Under the Never Sky ( Under the Never Sky #1 )

Under the Never Sky ( Under The Never Sky #1 )
Author: Veronica Rossi
Publication date: Jan 3rd, 2012
Published by: HarperCollins
Genre: YA Dystopia
Formats: E-book

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.

DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

March read for Young Adult Blogger Book Club. #YABBC

Under the Never Sky is set in the future, a world ravaged by Aether storms scarring the earth. Society has split into two - the Dwellers and the Outsiders. While the Dwellers live safe inside their domes and traverse virtual worlds where there is no danger, no fear, be what you want, experience what you like. The Outsiders are hunters and gatherers living under the Aether and surviving. But the Outsiders have something else, a select few have enhanced senses of sight, smell and sound which helps them to survive and live.

When Aria, a Dweller is exiled from her dome for breaking the rules in search of her mother meets Perry the Outsider, who is on the lookout for someone too. They decide to help each other find the ones they love.

Let's get the things I didn't like out of the way first?

  • Dweller Pods
I wish we knew more about the why, how and what, behind the dweller pods. How did they get there? What happened?
  • Aria
Through majority of the first half Aria was just a mean, whiny, cranky dweller who needed to be taken care of. Yes, I get it. You are bound to be disarrayed when thrown into the desert from your life of comfort. But I would atleast try to look after myself, however pathetic I may have been at it. It seemed like she didn't even try. Oh let's not forget her being mean. But she does get better.

I liked generally everything else in this. There are holes here and there. Some missing bits that will hopefully and most probably be filled in the upcoming books.

And now the good stuff. Gosh there was so much good stuff !

First off.......
  • Perry
Ok dreadlocks are not my type, but i'm willing to ignore that. Vain, not a big talker, great at archery (how is that not hot?) , gruff and initially seemingly mean, which I get. Of course he would hate the dwellers who have it all. Good food, better living conditions, free of illnesses. I love how he warms up to Aria gradually.
  • NO Insta-love (WooHooo!)
I loved the fact the two despised each other, they didn't want to touch the other let alone be in their very presence. Their love is slow, gradually growing with understanding and getting to know the other. Just as it should be.
  • Roar !
I loved this guy. The fun best friend who is an Aud (super-sharp hearing) and can also hear the thoughts of people if he touches them! How awesome is that?
There's loads more to love along with the Aether storms, that threaten the lives of the Outsiders that potentially is the cause of some people developing "super senses", basically a select few who develop enhanced senses which potentially help the tribe in surviving. Read it will you!

On the whole a interesting read that sucks you in and keeps you turning the pages, as soon as Aria stops being annoying that is. Should you pick it up? Most definitely, Yes!

This Week's Teaser:

“Life is just like the game of poker, you never know what cards you will get. Sitting against the people, you can either win with the king or live on a joker.

Many times in life you are forced to play the blind bet, and achieve overwhelming success, with loads of cash in your pocket or you may reach disastrous conclusions, losing everything you have got.

That’s the reason I love playing poker.”

-Abhinav Shrivastava & Prerna Varma. The Dumb and the Dumbfounded (paperback).

Received in exchange for an honest review.
A good read so far. There's humour, friendships, a little romance. A decent debut novel I'd say. Let's see how it goes. =)

I'm reading this one as part of The Indian Quills Reading Challenge 2013 hosted by Reshmy @ The Tales Pensieve .

This Friday's question :

What is your guilty pleasure as far as reading? Is it a genre, or is it a certain type of book?

Oh my..

 Guilty Pleasure...
Had to think long and hard about this one.

You know when a character dies in a book? Not the ultra minor ones. Either the main leads or the important side ones. Well I actually find a story satisfying when someone dies, especially IF it's one of the main characters. And yes I do feel guilty, since that character could have bought so much more! But yeah, DEATH !!

But NOT if it's my favorite character. No way, no how! I'm biased like that.
And usually I find that the characters I do end up loving ultimately die. *Sigh* Story of my life..

Roar leaned across the table and smiled at her seductively, his dark hair falling into his eyes. 'When you say everything happens in the Realms, do you mean everything?'

Aria laughed nervously.'Yes. Especially that. There are no risks in the Realms.'

actually feels real?'

'Why are we talking about this?'

'I need a Smarteye,' he said.  "

Let's have a
Sneak Peek!

Prologue

I was five when I knew something was different about me...my first memory.

Parentless, I had no recollection of who they were or what they even looked like. All I knew was that I was alone, residing at an orphanage disconnected from the outside world—disconnecting myself from the outside world. I pictured it even now, like an oil painting drawn across a canvas. The thick, heavy bristles of the paintbrush created an array of colors as the bright blue sky connected to the shockingly white snow. The snow blanketed everything around me, as if protecting me, the green forest displaying itself at every angle.

This orphanage was out of place in such a nature-infused environment. A large, two-story building, its windows seemed to cover almost every surface of brick. I remembered the brightness of the sun as it hit my sleepy face through one of those many windows. It would instantly warm my body as it greeted me to yet another day.

Taking a closer look, vines covered old, gray bricks as they coursed over the external surface of the orphanage. I used to have nightmares about those same vines making their way into my room as I slept. They’d appear ominously as their shadows pounded against the walls, taunting me as a storm brewed on outside. Venturing toward my bed, the vines would slither across my body, immediately trapping me in place. One would manage to wrap itself around my neck, squeezing tightly, as I struggled for air. Rendered frozen, the feeling of fear took hold as it bubbled up deep inside my chest. And as I felt the burning pain in my throat, a thought would flash through my mind of this moment being my last. It never was, though, as I would instantly wake up.

I always did have a wild imagination.

To chase away the terror, I found myself standing before my windowpane the morning after. The bright sun beating down on my skin, I realized my fear derived from nothing more than a dream. Sighing in relief, I remained motionless, my eyes drawn to the vast forest off in the distance. It surrounded the orphanage, like a gatekeeper, the leaves of the trees bristling in irritation. The wind blew right through those tall structures, whistling, as my ears picked up the all too familiar sound.

I somehow found myself standing directly in front of that very forest. My memory was hazy on exactly how I got there but I recalled waking up, after one of my many dreams, to the feeling of immense hunger as my body stirred in discomfort.

Then I was suddenly at the foot of the forest.

This was not me simply being hungry. I would almost describe it as a feeling of starvation, like there was some essential component that my body missed. Whatever it was, this need was so powerful that I was weak in the knees by the pain as my belly contracted and released, contracted and released, continually. Food provided temporary relief for me, but there was always this presence in the corner of my mind as my brain searched for the one thing my body craved.

I ignored that nagging voice in my head, the one whispering for something I was unaware that I even needed. It was something unfathomable yet inherent. I paid it no attention and just openly stared at the forest that beckoned me. The view distracted me for a moment, which was good, as it temporarily calmed my stomach rumblings. Taking shallow breaths, the cool air blew in and out between my cold, chapped lips.

It was at that exact moment I realized the forest was in fact isolating me from everything and everyone outside of its confines. Almost like a hungry bird circling its prey. Even young, my instincts picked up on that, which immediately told me something.

Eyes were watching me.

Received as part of a blog tour!

Truth be told I wasn't expecting much from this one. But for a debut, this one's actually good!  The premise doesn't let on much.

Dahlia Winter's has always known there was something different about her. One of her earliest memories is the feeling of being watched , she's known this even at the young age of five. She never fit into the foster system until one family decides to take her in and starts breaking her shell. Soon she finds herself amid strange occurrences. People vanishing, healed injuries, cravings for blood. Enter green-eyed hunk who helps her find her way and meet her destiny.

I'll tell you this. This book starts out creepy. Reaallyy creepy. What with her earliest memories and wierd blood swapping incident with the wolf (I'll let you find out about that yourself) . It was an eerie ride.

This is a really interesting take on angels and vampires. That's right. This one has angels, vampires and magic. I was actually able to guess a little with the hints that miss Channelle kept dropping. The scars on her back? I started figuring out the significance pretty soon. And the introduction to the lamia aka vampires? Well yeah kinda got where  that was leading to. But I enjoyed reading it nonetheless.

I was initially worried when all these elements started meshing together. Hoping this wouldn't be like a dish gone bad because of too many exotic ingredients but didn't so kudos to you Christina!

Now things I enjoyed :

  • Sam
Sam is Dahlia foster brother. And I loved the rapport between them! His constant teasing and trying to get Dahlia to loosen up, his worrying, all of it was really endearing. I was actually did not like the ending with him. Not needed!
  • Merging of the Lapsus ( the fallen aka angels) and Lamia (vampires)
Yeah I was nice to see how she got them together it was a bit traditional vampire abilities mixed with a little Vampire Academy-ish powers plus angels from Hush hush ( I haven't read this series yet but I know the basic storyline and stuff within )
  • Ava
I liked her. The mysterious girl who Dahlia connects with at school. She could have been further fleshed maybe but she was good!

I couldn't totally connect with Greyson ( the green-eyed hunk ) at all times. I liked him, he was a good character. He just didn't seems all that memorable to me. Maybe it's something wrong with me, but hey it's just my individual opinion.

On the whole a really good and intriguing read. I will be looking forward to reading the next book and finding out about Rowan a character who is introduced to us at the end but don't know anything about in Fallen Tears the novella.

A great job from a debut author with a high scope of getting it to greatness with her interesting take on vamps and angels. Christina Channelle I'll be on the look out for you.

The Immortal Companion is a YA Paranormal Fantasy series that consists of

About the Author

I grew up in Simpsonville, South Carolina and moved to Charlotte, North Carolina at the age of twelve. Until then, my life simply revolved around softball, writing, and cheering on the N.C. State Wolfpack by my father’s side.

A true desire to write began once I reached my high school years. Poems and Short stories filled my notebooks for Science, History, and Math. But by graduation, a second passion would prove to be far too great for me to ignore – the desire to help people.

My career path led me into the field of emergency services. I became a professional firefighter, which after a few years led to the promotion of Fire Lieutenant. Concurrently, I expanded my studies to become an Emergency Medical Technician. I have since resigned from the fire department and chose to advance my career in the medical field to become a Paramedic Crew Chief. It has thus far been a rewarding career that has brought me a life full of happiness, constant rewards, and getting to help the public in a most drastic time of need.

After the birth of Ava, my daughter, I decided that I needed to write her story. For the first time in years, I picked up a pen and began writing. It was a small, leather bound journal that allowed me to write all of her accomplishments, life experiences, and memories that wouldn’t be able to fit into a baby album. It unknowingly lit a fire within me that I wouldn’t be able to shake.
From that point on, I spent every minute of my free time writing; sometimes staying up into the wee hours of the next morning. The Immortal Companion series is the result of my relit desire.

Welcome to the world of my imagination.
I hope you enjoy the tales.
