Guest Post + Mini Reviews : Interim Goddess of Love Trilogy

Guest Post

Making believable characters (when your inspirations are so unreal)
-Mina V. Esguerra

This is a little embarrassing to admit, but I never worried about how "believable" my characters would be, when I started. The story for my first novella to ever be published, (My Imaginary Ex) came to me rather quickly, with most of the characters already formed and sure of their roles in my head.

Then when I tried writing another story, and then another, I saw that this believability thing was going to be an issue. I didn't want each main character to seem like the same person, or worse just like me. So I started doing this to make sure I kept them separate and somewhat real:

1. Main characters are based on real-life inspirations.
Some of them know that they've become a main character in my books, and some don't, haha. But I find it essential now to peg a main character against people I actually know, and know well, so at every turn I can ask myself, what would she do? What would she say?
You think this would be a cheat, and that I as a writer had little to do now that I was just documenting someone else's life. But no -- I've had to edit a real-life reaction or event for believability, because if I wrote something exactly as it happened, no one would believe it.

2. Love interests are composites of a fantasy and a real person.
Because I write romances, and in many ways it's like writing a fantasy (because how can a guy be that perfect?) I do take inspiration not just from a real person but the fantasy that the person represents. Does this make a character less believable? I guess they do, but in real life we see guys all the time that we don't feel attracted to, and yet someone is so into him. So the Love Interest, he actually won't be the perfect guy for every person, but if someone loves him, then why? What could he do to make her (the main character) fall in love with him? What could he do to make her angry?

3. Supporting characters are based on personality types.
I did this for the first time in Interim Goddess of Love, because it was the first time I had introduced so many characters and love interests in one story. I pretty much took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator test and assigned a "type" for each character. This helped me keep track of each one, and how they'd act, and what they would do when certain events happened.

Now that I've written this down, it all seems so planned and technical. Not every writer will need to do this, or need to put themselves through this, but I actually find this part fun.

Mini Reviews

Interim Goddess of Love ( Interim Goddess of Love #1 )
Author: Mina V. Esguerra
Published by: Bright Girl Books
Genre: YA contemporary, fantasy
Rating: 4 quills.
Buy links: Amazon / Smashwords
  Goodreads

College sophomore Hannah Maquiling doesn't know why everyone tells her their love problems. She's never even had a boyfriend, but that doesn't stop people from spilling their guts to her, and asking for advice. So maybe it shouldn't be a surprise when the cutest guy in school tells her that she's going to have to take on this responsibility -- but for all humanity.

The Goddess of Love has gone AWOL. It's a problem, because her job is to keep in check this world's obsession with love (and lack of it). The God of the Sun, for now an impossibly handsome senior at an exclusive college just outside of Metro Manila, thinks Hannah has what it takes to (temporarily) do the job.

While she's learning to do this goddess thing, she practices on the love troubles of shy Kathy, who's got a secret admirer on campus. Hannah's mission, should she choose to accept it, is to make sure that he's not a creepy stalker and they find their happily ever after -- or at least something that'll last until next semester. (As if she could refuse! The Sun God asked so nicely. And he's so, well, hot.)

I'll let you know, I didn't expect such a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed Interim Goddess of Love. Hannah was a good character but pretty average nonetheless. She's the friend that ends up listening to everyone else's love life, dishing out advice but never really applying it to herself. Don't we all have a friend like that?
Hannah has always been a a magnet for people in need of some help, they just seem to open up to her and that makes her a perfect candidate to fill in for the Goddess of Love who seems to be MIA.

Let me get to the good bits. The males in the book! Oh man are they all just ........... *sigh* ..
Quin, the guy who doesn't really emote his feelings or thoughts, rough'n tough Diego, oh so sweet light Robbie and ofcourse conflicted Jake Lalisan.

All in all this was a  light read, with just the right doses of almost everything! There's romance, mythical gods and goddess', we actually learn things about the mythology of Philippines which was great to learn! I'm actually going to go ahead and get some research done ;) .

Queen of the Clueless ( Interim Goddess of Love #2 )
Author: Mina V. Esguerra

Genre: YA contemporary, fantasy
Rating: 3 quills.

If you've been feeling neglected by the Goddess of Love lately, don't worry -- Hannah Maquiling, college sophomore, is in training to take over. The Original Goddess is missing, but Hannah is Interim Goddess now, and she should figure out how to solve humanity's love problems soon. Quin (God of the Sun) is still her mentor, still really hot, but apparently isn't as honest about his other earthly relationships as she thought. It's frustrating, and enough to make her check out possibilities with Diego (God of the Sea) and Robbie (Cute Human).

In the meantime, she's decided to spend some of her precious training time helping to break up a relationship, instead of putting one together. Why? Because the girl in question happens to be her best friend Sol, whose boyfriend is stealing not just from her, but from other people on campus. Sol didn't exactly summon the Goddess, but this is what power over Love is for, right? Surely it's not just about matchmaking, but ending doomed relationships too. (Even when it's not what people want.)

Omigosh Diego! I wasn't expecting to genuinely like him! He's got baggage alright, and there was a lot of potential between him and Hannah but I for one was all for Robbie.
Why do all the Sun gods in any mythological setting happen to be the smart, handsome ones? I feel like giving up on Quin (which I won't ofcourse), he keeps sending out such mixed signals. It's frustrating! Just get to it with Robbie!
The poor thing....

This one helps you find a lot more about each of the characters, Vida, Robbie, Sol and especially so Diego. He's at the forefront at last and it was brilliant!

Ofcourse Hannah has a new assignment this time it's a best friend Sol itself. Her boyfriend seems shady, and Hannah is going to do her best to help her friend, but just how much trouble she gets into is something you'll have to see.

Icon of Indecisive ( Interim Goddess of Love #3 )
Author: Mina V. Esguerra
Published by: Bright Girl Books
Genre: YA contemporary, fantasy

College student Hannah Maquiling, also temporarily working as the Goddess of Love, has had enough of everyone asking for her help when it comes to relationships. It's her turn to find romance! She deserves it, after serving as matchmaker and confidant to everyone else in Ford River College for the past year. She's had a crush on handsome senior (and God of the Sun) Quin forever, but he's destined to fall in love with an extraordinary mortal woman, so she's figured her chances with him have pretty much dropped to zero.

It's not like she doesn't have any options for a classic college romance though. There's Diego, God of the Sea and Quin's best friend/enemy. And regular guy Robbie is stepping up, making sure she knows how he feels about her. How hard can it be for a goddess to find someone to love, and be loved in return?
Ok....... wait.... what was that ending???
I was soooo confused about what rating I could give this one. 3.5? a measly 2? It wasn't as bad as a 2.... But .. that end... and that.. and Robbie..........

I liked this book ofcourse I did. There was so much goin on, which is great.. It's the last two chapters that had me at a loss. Am I happy with that ending? Mina Esguerra doesn't technically make Hannah choose one of the men. Sorta. She kinda ends up with both.... What? Yeah that's right.

She loves Quin, and Quin has feelings for her too. But nooo he thinks thats taking advantage of her. And she's going to try it out with Robbie. Oh she and Quin wil eventually get together in some faaaarr future. But Robbie... :( Doesn't he deserve someone who loves him back unconditionally? I'm glad that she gives him a chance, she loves him too. But I don't really know if that's good for him.... I don't know what to think. And then the way everything ended. Like comeon!!!

Rating : 3 quills

All in all I'd give this series a total of 3.5 quills! If you love mythology, romance and short yet engrossing reads. Pick this one up!

Series rating : 3.5 quills

Book Blurb

To us, first responders are heroes. But for them, risking their lives is a normal, everyday thing.

Mudflap:
Born the baby of the family, Mudflap has always had something to prove to emerge out of the shadows of his older siblings. He spent eight years as a Special Ops elite sniper and is now a firefighter. But at his heart, he’s just a normal West Texas good old boy who loves his beer, women and football, until the Department of Defense calls him up to say they need his skills again.

Shanae:
Shanae is a first responder of a different sort. She’s a trauma nurse who works on a medical evacuation helicopter team. But while she lives a life full of adrenaline every day, it’s just a cover for her real life, where she hides in the shadows and is secret agent, Shadowfox for the Lubbock Foxtrot Team (LiFT). She’s living the kind of life that most people think exists only in movies and books.

Working for two different branches of the government, Mudflap and Shanae are in a race against time and the terrorists who threaten the very heart of West Texas life, football. They’re working toward the same goal, but find themselves in a confrontation against each other and the lies they’ve each had to hide behind. Can love win out in the end or will the cost be each other and their very lives?

First responders are heroes every day, but this story tells the tale of when they become even more and find love along the way. The key is for them to stay alive so that they can complete their mission and just maybe live happily ever after.

On an ordinary day, they save lives. On an extraordinary day, they save the country.

She took a sip of her wine and looked at him appraisingly. “Okay, now it’s your turn to share. Tell me how in the world you got the name Mudflap. It has to be a nickname, right?”

He chuckled mockingly. “Unfortunately, no. It’s the name that my parents gave me on my birth certificate.”

“Why? And please tell me you’re an only child or that they didn’t do the same thing to your brothers and sisters.”

His eyes sparkled with amusement although he tried to sound annoyed.  “Are you making fun of my name?”

She worked to straighten her grin. “No sir, I would never make fun of a highbrow name like Mudflap.” She giggled. “Come on. You have to tell me the story.”

He sighed deeply before launching into the story. “I have a brother who’s seven years older than me and then twin sisters who are five years older.”

“Ooh, twins run in your family, too. That settles it. We’re never allowed to procreate. We’d end up having a litter,” she teased.

His eyes darkened for a moment as he considered her. A shiver of awareness rolled up her spine, but then he continued. “I wasn’t planned. My mom never forgave my dad for getting her pregnant. To add insult to injury, my dad was out hunting when mom went into labor. I’m not sure what the story is, but mom swears the night I was conceived dad was so horny, he got turned on by a mudflap girl. Obviously, that’s not even possible, but I honestly don’t really want to know what the whole story is. All I know is that mom was hormonal and ticked at dad and I paid for it with my name. She’s since forgiven me for being born, but I’m stuck with the name.”

Shanae snickered. “That is so wrong.” But her lips continued to twitch.

“Tell me about it. I’m the one who’s had to live with the name my whole life.”

“Have you ever considered changing it?”

“Yeah, it’s crossed my mind a time or two or hell, one hundred times, but I figure it’s a good reminder to always use birth control.”

She full-out guffawed at that. “Oh my God.” The snorting continued. “That’s absolutely priceless.” She giggled into her hand.

“Oh yeah, just continue to laugh it up. I see how you are.”

“I’m sorry, but it really is a great story.”

"I'm making coffee, want any?" Darcy called from the kitchen.

As Steven entered the kitchen he said, "I'd love a cup."

Steven leaned against the counter. Darcy poured water into the coffee maker and then scooped the coffee in. After she pressed the brew button, she turned and stared back at him.

"That wasn't so bad," he said.

She nodded. "Yeah, it was okay."

Steven laughed. "Your parents were kind." He reached his hand out toward her.

Darcy walked to him, taking his hand.

"Your dad gave us his blessing."

"I had no doubt he would. Your family is well known."

Steven wasn't sure what had come over him, maybe it was the scotch he'd shared with her dad, but he couldn't resist the beautiful woman in front of him. He tugged her to him, and her body molded against his perfectly. With his free hand, he pushed her hair behind her ear and then pressed his lips to hers. He expected resistance from her, but she opened up right away, wanting the kiss as much as he did.

Sliding his hand around her neck, he tilted her head so he could deepen the kiss. Her fingers danced around his waist and the little sensation went straight to his groin. Releasing her hand, he gripped her waist and pulled her into him. He was hard and it pressed into her and she didn't seem to mind. Damn this woman! She should be pushing away from him, reminding him they were to stay friends, but instead he kept hoping her hand would find its way lower.

Could they do this once and then pretend it never happened? His erection was telling him yes, but his brain was telling him no. He started to pull away from the kiss, but Darcy wouldn't let him.

God, he was turned on and wanted to touch her, taste her, explore her. He needed her!

"Stop, Darcy." He pushed her off him.

She stepped back, a shocked look on her face.

"I can't control myself. I want to take you to bed so bad."

"I want that too." She moved closer to him again and wrapped her arm around his neck and let her other hand dangle at his waistband. "Can't we have a little fun?"

Do it or not? Yes or no? His core ached and taunted him. Taking a deep breath, he decided to listen to the head below.
He lifted Darcy up and sat her on the counter. His lips were everywhere. Her neck, collarbone. His hands were greedy as they worked the buttons on her blouse. "Stop me now, Darcy."

She gazed into his eyes and then cupped his erection through his pants. "No."

"No turning back?"

"No turning back."

Received as part of a Blog Tour !

Darcy White is down on her luck, cut off from her family, with a closed down restaurant, no job and pretty soon with no home. So what does jobless and soon to be homeless Darcy decide to do to pay the bills? You probably read the synopsis so I'm going to get on with it. She answers a Help Wanted ad that pays really well. All she's got to do is pretend to be someone's wife!

Now here's where Steven McDonald enters, the hottie who posts the wacky ad.
Steven loves working for his grandpa's apple orchard company. And he's soon to inherit the business himself! But ofcourse granddaddy sets an ultimatum, settle down and get married or get nothing. Desperate to please and not lose the orchard, he places an ad in the paper.... for a wife.

As it turns out Steven and Darcy know each other from high school and happened to be each other's crushes. Never acting on it ofcourse. Now that they have to act out the charade of being engaged,  they grow close, feelings develop, sparks fly and certain sensuous scenes take place.

Hurdles come along the way and threaten to separate them. But will love conquer all?
You'll just have to read it won't you? ;)

This book was pretty fun really! It was an interesting premise certainly. The title is what really drew me to the book. There are quirky bits and funny bits that make you smile. Steven was ADORABLE!! Darcy was........nothing special really. She wasn't a bad character not at all. I'd knock down a star if she was. I just couldn't deal with her sometimes. Let's just say I adored Steven.

The concept and dialogs etc. were pretty enjoyable. The thing that held me back from enjoying this completely would have to be the slight disconnect I felt from the characters and book. I wasn't completely invested all the time.
Also Darcy and Steven seemed to minimal arguments. They had arguments, yes. But as much as I thought they really should? No. They do move in together I was expecting a LOT of arguments. But they seemed to take most of it in stride. Maybe that's just them.
Darcy and Steven as a couple were good. Darcy ever witty and strong and undeniably stubborn. Handsome, caring, confident Steven.  Overall the couple made the story a good read. Despite my negatives and enjoyable read for sure! Two people falling in love. What's not to love?
